week-o-giving-thanks.

so, i've been really shitty at updating this blog now that i've got that other one. it may end up being reduced to just a photo blog and quick updates rather than the longer ramblings i'm accustomed to making.

thursday. hiking with mum, then food prep for hot pot thanksgiving dinner (pictured above) with parents, mike, aunt and cousin jane.
friday. chiropractor visit! some "black friday" shopping at the americana with mum. back to the west side.
saturday. saw an education.
sunday. dan's return from new york. dinner at corkbar with mike, dan, eli and eli's friends.
monday. oh, cyber monday. major purchases made. john&cindy bring baby leila into the world!

seafood at anisette.

crossed.

finally sat down for dinner at anisette on saturday. we'd been to their bar before for some wine and oysters, as well as for brunch, but never for dinner. i adore the bistro feel of the place, and background chatter that was almost all french. we had half dozen oysters (kumamoto and malpeque) and half dozen littleneck clams, the saumon fume, roasted trout and moules frites. everything was excellent. i was also testing out a "new" lens - a 50mm f/1.8 that mike found for me. it's pretty great to take food photos with, especially in the dim dinner lighting.

sunday we had brunch at a new spot on montana called babalu, did some holiday shopping and watched a christmas carol, which had the how to train your dragon trailer before it. it was very exciting.

19 November 2009

quiet, please.

hair-cutted.

things have been pretty quiet and uneventful. a couple of recent highlights include: allen's birthday dinner, ARTBOX at BOXeight gallery downtown, group bike ride down to manhattan beach.

it's too loud!

09 November 2009

eastside travels.

thursday. arcadia to have dinner with the peas.

friday. pasadena to see NPR / chicago public radio's wait wait.. don't tell me!, a radio news quiz that dan's friend eva is a producer on.

saturday. hollywood to get a haircut at chroma studio; temple city to have lunch with the peas. new chiropractor - bloodletting involved. dinner at the yard in santa monica.

sunday. silverlake and los feliz for silverlake art crawl. west hollywood for sunday supper at eva with mike, juney&lucy and gerhard - ridiculous.

03 November 2009

newblog.

so, i decided to start a new blog. i will continue to update this one as usual, with photos and mundane happenings, but i wanted to try something new. the new blog is called aujourd'hui je.. (or today i.. in french). basically, i want to try documenting one new, yet in some way interesting, thing that i see/hear/learn/do each day. i'm hoping it will force me to a) do new things and b) appreciate the small things i would normally overlook. who knows how long i'll be able to keep it up, or whether i'll even want to after awhile, but i figured i'd give it a shot.

01 November 2009

halloween weekend.

"bloody" fountain at dreamworks.

at work on friday, lots of people dressed up and brought their kiddies, and even participated in a costume contest. the fun thing about this is that people aren't weirded out when you take pictures of them and/or their children.

on saturday, we biked down to venice to brunch at hash, then we got some coffee at intelligentsia (where on of the baristas had some awesome baseball tattoos - mets logo on one elbow, yankees logo on the other, bat on one index finger, baseball on the other.. and he said he was going to get both a brooklyn dodgers and a los angeles dodgers tattoo soon!!) and walked around abbot kinney for a bit. then we did some shopping at the promenade - i bought a couple books - before heading to the stetson house up in newhall. we did some trick-or-treating with asher (a ninja), owen (yoda) and their day care friends and hung out for a bit and then drove down to avidan's house party.

sunday morning we drove to will rogers state park to go hiking. we first tried to take the rustic canyon trail, but it was unmaintained and about half a mile into it, the path was covered in poison oak, so we turned around and took the friendlier inspiration point loop, plus an extra offshoot of the backbone trail. it gets up pretty high, and we ended up getting a great view of LA, santa monica and the pacific ocean. i brought my camera and took some pictures at the top of the mountain where we turned around. the fried egg sandwich from huckleberry afterwards was perfect.

for dinner we made some fresh gazpacho (i forgot to mention i bought an oster blender that came with a food processor attachment) and pan-grilled sea bass with spicy corn salad. it was deeeeeee-lightful.

puppy food hike.

seared figs and jamon at the bazaar.

this morning we went for a hike out in runyon canyon with ben. it was a nice hike, and reminded us how much we enjoy it - perhaps we shall try working hiking into our exercise routine more often. afterwards we brunched at tart, where i had their sausage hash (roasted red potatoes with andouille sausage, chicken apple sausage, smoked alligator sausage, onions, peppers and topped with three eggs) - freaking good.

before heading back to santa monica, dan and i spotted a pet adoption and spent a good half hour meeting lots of nice puppies. i really wanted to bring home a five month old pit bull mix named spankey.. or this beautiful beautiful rotweiler named xena.. i'm a bit dog-obsessed right now, i just really wish work allowed dogs, because i would get one in a heartbeat then. guess i'll have to keep waiting..

for dinner we made a couple new york steaks, a spicy corn salad (corn, butter, garlic, lime, paprika, chili powder, cayenne, salt, pepper), a simple salad (romaine, tomatoes, avocado, homemade lemon dressing) and a bottle of zin.

and YAY the yankees win the american league penant.. now for them to smash the phillies..!!

open your mouth to seafood.

flower at the getty center.

can't even explain how glad i am it's the weekend.

drove back to arcadia to lunch at din tai fung dumpling house with simeon, who i haven't seen in.. well, almost a decade. he's one of the people i looked up to most back in the day, and it was nice to catch up and see that we're still on the same page for a lot of things.

for dinner, dan and i went back to blue plate oysterette. we started with four oysters (baron point, luna, kusshi, island creek) and two clams (top neck, little neck) each. dan had the lobster roll again, and i went for their lobster mac & cheese (with gruyere and truffle oil) which was sooo good. even though we were full, we opted to get dessert anyway since their banana bread custard just looked too good to resist (though i now have a tummy-ache)! afterwards we went and saw new york, i love you, which was visually very cool and a great collection of little "love" stories.

23 October 2009

muddled limes & raspberries.

flower at the getty center.

we had dinner with ben last night at comme ca, a "modern french brasserie" in west hollywood. at the bar i ordered their caip-germain-ha, a twist on the traditional caipirinha with cabana cachaca, st. germain elder flower liquer, muddled limes and raspberries. it was sooooo good, i had two! we all split a charcuterie plate and a cheese plate - both were delightful, and really filling. for our entrees, dan and ben both had the steak frites, and i had their roasted monkfish. everything was delicious, and we were all too full for dessert (which is bummer because they have a brioche bread pudding on their dessert menu and if you didn't know, i'm a sucker for bread pudding..)

21 October 2009

and just like that, the season's over.

the dodgers single win in the 2009 nlcs.

i actually started crying. then again, they didn't deserve to win - they've been playing so badly since the nlds. i hope the yankees trample the phillies. but i can't wait for the 2010 season, and am already getting pumped for spring training in arizona! what can i say, i've fallen in love with baseball.

19 October 2009

sad face.

dodgers just had a heartbreaking loss to the phillies in game 4 of the nlcs.. after being up 4-3, broxton blows the save and we lose 5-4..

now to make it to the world series the dodgers have to win the next three games - a very difficult, but not impossible task (eg, boston red sox in the 2004 and 2007 ALCS..).

fingers crossed.

18 October 2009

a week(end) update.

left field pavilion dodger fans.

i'm behind on posting, so i'll just give a quick laundry list of the past week.

_dinner with a bunch of dreamworkers (dan, mike, rob, mattJ, ray, eli, edL, lauraW) at umami. their casablanca burger, which is basically a lamb burger, is pretty mindblowing, and everything else was also very good.

_NLCS games 1 and 2 at dodgers stadium vs. the phillies. dodgers lost game one, won game two. both great great games.

_where the wild things are. not a children's movie, but a movie about childhood. not a lot happens, but visually stunning. very interesting take on the book.

_back to the east side to get my teeth cleaned. also dined at JTYH restaurant in rosemead for some yummy shaved noodles.

_brunch at amandine. major disappointment at the dodgers loss in game 3 to philadelphia.. but it ain't over 'til it's over!

11 October 2009

max terrorizes a pumpkin.

max from where the wild things are.

as previously mentioned, we bought some pumpkins to draw on (instead of carving), and we used sharpie paint markers. we had a little baby pumpkin that we used to test the markers, and one large pumpkin each. i decided to paint three different images of max, the little boy in the wolf suit, from where the wild things are. the full photo set can be found here (includes dans interpretation of a where the wild things are movie poster and a large mets logo).

sweep getty ramen.

changing leaves at the getty center.

highlight of the weekend - dodgers sweep the cardinals in st. louis and clinch a spot in the national league championship series!! the next series starts on thursday against either the phillies or the rockies. ya ya, gooooo dodgers!

last night was the last saturday off the 405 at the getty center. we went, walked around taking pictures, checked out a few galleries (irving penn's small trades photo exhibit is really really amazing!), and then watched dent may - a very funky, cool little indie pop band from mississippi - perform. note about the picture above - PROOF that california doesn't have only evergreens and that leaves do change color and fall of the trees here, damnit! and we have seasons!! just not severe ones.

afterwards we dinnered at ramenya (tenshin-men for me, mabo ramen for dan), purchased pumpkins to paint on (images to come later), and rented year one - which was absolutely awful awful awful.

10 October 2009

dinner at the bazaar.

sea urchin sandwich @ the bazaar.

dinnered at the bazaar with dan, mike & zai last night. we brought two bottles of wine - a '96 tempranillo and an '05 dolcetto d'alba. we ordered as follows:

"philly cheesesteak" - air bread, cheddar, seared wagyu beef
sea urchin sandwiches with avocado served on steamed buns
not your everyday caprese - cherry tomatoes and liquid mozzarella
traditional gazpacho estilo algeciras
seared figs with jamon iberico fermin and pedro ximenez reduction
ensaladilla rusa - potatoes, carrots, mayo and tuna belly
catalan pork sausage with white beans and mushrooms
lamb loin with foraged mushrooms and aired pototoes
beef hanger steak with piquillo pepper confit
braised veal cheeks with california oranges
sauteed cauliflower "couscous" - cauliflower puree, harissa, lemon, fried quinoa
watermelon "nigiri" with hamachi, wasabi, red wine, soy foam and jalepeno
baby peaches with traditional peach
creamy chocolate heart with coffee and cardamom

amazing as usual!

09 October 2009

an expensive hobby.

dodgers celebrate improbable 2009 NLDSgame2 win.

so - the 2009 NLCS tickets for dodger stadium went on sale today, and of course, we bought tix to every game. i think we spent about $700 today. we also spent more than $500 on the current NLDS series. luckily, we get our money back for the games that don't actually happen. i don't even want to think about world series tickets and how expensive they're going to be - if the dodgers make it there, that is. this whole postseason baseball thing is very expensive, and nerve-racking - my blood pressure and heart rate feel constantly elevated - hopefully that part is just in my head and not a reality. ahhhh, go dodgers!

new york & chicago pizza in santa monica.

santa monica's new n.y. & c. pizzeria.

so last night was the grand opening of NY&C, so of course, after all the amazing craziness of being at game 2 of the cardinals v. dodgers NLDS and the dodgers' extremely improbable win in the bottom of the ninth, we thought we'd go try it out for ourselves. they had an $8 special - 2 slices plus a draft beer - and dan got pepperoni while i had the sausage&peppers. it was really really good, and according to dan, passes the authentic-new-york-pizza test (they don't serve chicago style by the slice so we didn't try it.. perhaps next time.. )

ny-style pizza slizzies.

as i was reading through my food blogs today, i stumbled upon a post on grubstreetLA about NY&C, and lo-and-behold, dan and i are in the picture they use (warning, i look fat and neckless)!! yup, that's me in my blue mannywood t-shirt. and yes, on that tv in the corner, they are showing either andre ethier's homer, or mark loretta's winning single, or some other amazing dodger moment from last night!

06 October 2009

03 October 2009

dodgers are NLwest champs!

dodgers just clinched NL west champs! second year in a row!!! NLDS series against the cardinals starts on wednesday - already got our tix ready to go!!!! ya ya ya, go dodgers!!!!

STREETfood.

flowers in cape cod.

AJ was in town last night, so we grabbed dinner with him at susan feniger's street in hollywood. it's a super cool half indoor, half outdoor space with global-street-food-inspired fare. we had too much trouble deciding what to order, so we had our waitress just order for us and this is what we got:

japanese shizo shrimp
ono sashimi
spinach varenyky (ukrainian dumplings)
kaya toast
vietnamese corn with pork belly
saag paneer
korean bbq short ribs
tatsutage fried chicken
singapore chili prawns

everything was really freaking good. in particular the kaya toast, corn and pork belly, and the tatsutage chicken (and i don't even like chicken!). definitely want to go back.

02 October 2009

9dragons.

belly of a sea urchin.

it's been a pretty quiet week at work, but i just wanted to mention a couple happenings.

one. we had a crew screening of how to train your dragon in its current state and it's looking very very solid (read: amazing!). so i'm very excited for that - and you should be too! it comes out in march - get excited!!

two. shane acker, the director of 9, gave a lunch time presentation/talk about the making of the movie, showing art, textures, animation tests, and department-iterations of a couple sequences. pretty wicked stuff.

i don't say it nearly enough, but i love my job!

30 September 2009

a san francisco treat.

AT&T park in san francisco.

we woke up bright & early saturday morning to catch a flight to san francisco. after checking into the prescott hotel in union square, we mosied on over to chinatown and had dim sum at city view restaurant. afterwards we headed to AT&T park and met up with david and robyn for the cubs vs. giants game. i'd never been before, and as much as i abhor the giants, they have a really amazing ballpark. [on a side note: after all the parks i've visited this season, i have to say that dodger stadium is pretty shitty in the sense of amenities - if you're just going to watch the game (which is what we usually do) it's great, but the food sucks, the parking sucks, etc.] after the game, robyn took us to the mission where we had some really yummy ice cream at bi-rite creamery (i had the creme fraiche flavor - so good!) and we met up with amy, eli and tony for drinks (at various bars) and dinner at the monk's kettle.

sunday morning we did a bit of shopping around union square - i bought a grey plaid hooded jacket from H&M - and then joined eli&megan for brunch at just for you, a bakery/cafe in potrero hill (i think). it was my first time having beignets, and they also have really great turkey apple sausage patties! as it turns out, the folsom street fair was happening that weekend so eli dropped us off there and we walked through it - i have never seen so many.. strange / naked / fascinating / leather-bound / leashed people in my life. oh, san francisco. after walking through the length of the fair, we continued walking towards golden gate park. once there we checked out the tutankhamun exhibit at the de young museum - it was very cool but disappointing since we were expecting to see his coffins in the end, but alas they were not part of the exhibit - their marketing imagery is extremely misleading. before heading back to the airport we grabbed dinner at king of thai noodle house which brought back memories of being hugely hungover back in october..

all in all, a great weekend. however, after having been out of town for the past three weekends, i'm really looking forward to not traveling this weekend.

24 September 2009

this is my family.

the pan clan at coast guard beach in cape cod.

not really sure what's happening in this photo, but i found it amusing.

22 September 2009

a little tripsy to cape cod.

my niece at a beach in cape cod.

took the red-eye friday night / saturday morning back to boston. from there the whole entire family packed into two cars and made our way over to cape cod. my niece and nephew are so big now! and cuter than ever. we arrived at the ocean edge resort in brewsterMA a little after ten in the morning. while the rest of the fam did some recuperation time, i did my very first five-mile run! afterwards we had lunch then headed to provincetown for the afternoon, then dinnered at a restaurant called abba.

sunday, we did some more exploration of the cape, including chatham, where we had lunch, several beaches just north of the elbow, and wellfleet. i put my feet in the atlantic ocean for the first time in several years! we dinnered at mac's shack in wellfleet - massive massive amounts of seafood. as a family, we devoured three dozen wellfleet oysters, two dozen littleneck clams, four ordered 2lb lobsters, i had a lobster linguini. we ended both nights at the resort playing mahjong - just me and my three brothers, which was quite fun.

after checking out monday morning, we headed to woodshole to check out the marine biology lab's aquarium. it was small, and help mostly local stuff, but it was pretty cool. from there we headed back to boston. monday was our parents' actual 35th anniversary (the purpose of the whole trip) so we dinnered at grill23 - the best steakhouse in boston (from what i've heard). and it was pretty freaking amazing. they have truffled tater tots!! and kobe cap steak, which most of my family ordered, but i got the lamb. for dessert i had their bread pudding, which completely put me over the top, i was absolutely stuffered.

flew back to LA this morning. it's good to be back, and i'm definitely looking forward to going back to work.

18 September 2009

i like me some wine. and tacos.

silverlake wine business cards.

went to silverlake wine after work yesterday for their weekly thursday tastings. the white flight was all austrian gruner veltliners, and the red flight was all primitivos (two italian, one californian). and of course, the let's be frank truck was outside offering up their tasty dogs. dan and i each had one of the spicy dogs, and then i had the white tasting while he did the red. on the way out i purchased a juris pinot noir (austrian, mike's belated birthday present) and a verdad rose (90/10 grenache/tempranillo rose - they were all out of the malbec rose that we tried a few weeks back that i loved, so giving this one a shot). ALSO! they had koshihikari echigo beer - our drink of choice whenever we go to the alibi room for some kogi. didn't buy any since i was already spending a pretty penny, but will definitely be going back to stock up on those bad boys.

speaking of kogi, we met up with robyn and his girlfriend amy at the alibi room on tuesday night. they were on the last leg of a three week road trip, and with their last stop in LA, they wanted to try the famous korean/mexican delights. we had the blackjack quesadilla of course, and short rib tacos, but we also tried the tofu tacos for the first time. they recently changed the recipe and it is really freaking good - i'll definitely be getting it regularly now.

off to boston / cape cod tonight for the peas' 35th anniversary. it'll be nice to have the whole fam together.. or painful & disatrous....

17 September 2009

14 September 2009

BOS-to-the-TON.

koalas @ the san diego zoo.

took a red-eye flight to boston thursday night. it was my first time on virgin america, which is really great, except i stupidly booked the row in front of the exit row, so our seats were non-reclining, which meant no sleep. arrived at 6am, and got dunkin donuts coffee before even leaving the airport - mmm. we stayed at harv&cindy's place in allston for the weekend, and got to their place just around 8a. after a quick run, harv took us to breakfast at zaftigs in coolidge corner. dan showed me around BU before i headed to the four seasons to have afternoon tea with lily and maddy for lily's birthday. i can't believe they're both in boston now and how much i miss them. but i'm also glad to be blessed with such amazing friends, even if most of them are on the other side of the country. that night we dinnered with john, harv and their families at shabu zen. so good! and natalie and dylan are getting so big now, yet adorable as always.

while friday was overcast and a bit drizzly, saturday was just lots and lots of rain. despite the weather, dan took me on a tour of the city, starting with an amazing breakfast at the paramount in beacon hill - seriously, best turkey sausage ever. the real bummer about the rain was that i couldn't bring my nice camera out with me so i had to settle for my little point&shoot. after walking around all morning, we met with some of dan's college buddies for lunch at stephanie's on newbury. that night, we went to the tampa bay rays vs. red sox game - it was my first time at fenway so i was so excited - which was supposed to start at seven. even though it was no longer raining, the game was rain delayed because they were expecting rain. it 8.30p it drizzled for 5 minutes, and the game started 2 hours late. at 10.30p or so, after only five innings, it actually did start raining and we go into another rain delay. the game would have been over if they'd started on time!! we stayed until midnight, when they decided to call the game, and spent our last half our there watching the dodgers vs. giants game on the jumbotron. oh, the irony.

sunday morning we got up early again to explore a bit more of boston, this time the area around government center, quincy market and the north end (split a cannoli from mike's pastries - yummmmm). the clouds were big and fluffy and the sun came out, so at least our last day in boston was nice. met up with family for chinese breakfast (but for lunch) and then headed over to harvard square to meet with a couple of dan's hometown friends before finally heading to the aiport and flying back to LA.

also, finished the lovely bones on the flight back to LA.. guess i need another book for next weekend.

08 September 2009

the lovely bones.

so i saw a trailer for the lovely bones the other day that looked pretty amazing. i'd heard about the book a couple years ago when it was super popular, but never got around to reading it. i wasn't particularly keen on reading it until i found out that peter jackson was directing, which really peaked my interest, so i purchased it tonight. i figure it will be good to read during all the hours i'll be on a plane this month - though i'll probably honestly need a couple more books for that.

07 September 2009

a labor day weekend.

beer tasting at sunset.

ah, who doesn't love three-day weekends?

after work on friday we stopped by the wine expo in santa monica to pick up some aperol and prosecco to make spritzes throughout the weekend. i'd never had one before, but man they are mighty tasty and refreshing. we also picked up a dolcetto d'alba there before munching at california roll factory.

saturday morning we biked to amandine and had our usual croque madame and strawberry french toast - it never gets old! that evening was a silverlake wine hosted beer tasting at barnsdall art park, followed by a screening of swingers on the lawn. we picked up a couple speck, pineapple & jalapeno pizzas from mozza2go (what an amazing idea) beforehand and had a good time hanging with nigel, benG and laura. afterwards, dan and i skipped over to ye rustic inn for some booze and wings with jasper and deron. we stayed until closing - i don't think i've been out that late, or had that much to drink, in quite a long time. it was lots of fun though.

slept in on sunday, and lunched at the new blue plate oysterette on ocean. we had the raw bar combo (2 oysters, 2 clams, 2 grilled shrimp and their daily ceviche - local sea bass that day), an order of mussels and the lobster roll. the food is great and the place is very cozy and cool - definitely going to be a new regular spot for us on the weekends, especially when i'm craving some tasty seafood. hit the beach in the afternoon with jasper and his buddies eddie and aaron. it was absolutely perfect beach weather. then we all hit up taiko in brentwood for some udon then gypsy cafe in westwood for hookah.

normally, the weekend would be over at this point, but thank goodness for labor day weekend. we decided to take it easy on monday and didn't do anything that would involve driving. we stayed in and made raspberry pancakes, eggs & turkey bacon for brunch (man, do i suck at making american breakfast), biked to cynergy to get sweet new kick stands for our bikes, watched some baseball, watched the dog whisperer marathon, and made steaks and asparagus for dinner (we are obsessed with jamie oliver's asparagus recipe - dry grill asparagus in grill pan until cooked, toss with lemon juice, olive oil, salt&pepper to taste, with some freshly grated parm on top - so easy and yet soooo freaking good).

it was a damn good weekend, but now i'm exhausted. luckily, i've a short week ahead of me.

ps, i forgot how good the hush sound's goodbye blues album was. takes me back to college...
