cerveteca and venice beach wines on rose.

we recently explored a bit more of the growing rose avenue area in venice. first, there was superba snack bar the end of last year, then we met mike and some of his friends at cerveteca, just a couple storefronts down.

bacalao (olive oil stewed salt cod, castelvetrano olives, capers, tomato, onion; above) and peruvian sashimi (sashimi grade salmon, aji amarillo, key lime cure, choclo corn, sweet potato, cilantro; below).

broccolini (two above), five spiced pulled pork sandwich with bitter orange BBQ sauce, siracha aioli, slaw (above). tacos de barbacoa with guajillo, cilantro, red onion, "mama’s sauce" (below).

so, i know i haven't said much about the food itself. everything was tasty, had good flavor and very fresh, but nothing was particularly mind-blowing, honestly. and while this was a few weeks ago, i'm having trouble remembering much about the food. i guess i would say the food is solid and if you're in the area, it's worth going to, especially since their patio is quite nice (below), but it's not what i would go out of my way for.

we split the banana cream pie, above, and it was the most disappointing part of the meal. the crust felt like it was only half, or quarter, baked, which is what bothered me the most. and the bananas didn't seem ripe enough to impart the rich banana flavor i look for, though at least it wasn't fake banana-y.

afterwards, we went next door (literally) to enjoy a bottle at venice beach wines.
