lunar new year's eve at water grill.

my parents asked me to pick a place for our lunar new year's even dinner. our family has a love of seafood that far outweighs our love for just about anything else, so i thought it would be a good time to try the famous water grill in downtown.

i really loved the interior of the space; they even had herringbone hardwood floors (which it was too dark for me to get a photo of). we sat right next to the semi-open kitchen too.

we started with two dozen oysters, half a dozen cherrystone clams and two sea urchins. we've already eaten most of them by the time i got around to taking the above photo. they had a selection of ten different kinds of oysters that day from both coasts. we were especially excited to see naked cowboy from new york, which is one of our favorites. we also ordered a bottle of austrian riesling (if i ever see an austrian riesling on a menu, i order it, and i haven't gone wrong yet) and it was perfect. there was only one on the menu at the time and i completely forgot to write down the name, but based on the list they have online, i think it was the nikolaihof "vom stein" riesling, federspiel, wachau 2005. but i really can't be sure.

for the main course, we each ordered a different type of fish. charcoal grilled wild pacific swordfish with wilted swiss chard and braised huckleberries, korean pepper crusted wild fijian ono with pork belly and miso braised root vegetables, pan roasted wild morro bay sablefish with oyster and lobster mushrooms and red wine anchovy reduction, and pan seared colorado catch striped bass with farro risotto and parmesan cream.

everyone was very happy with their dishes, and i really enjoyed my striped bass and the bed of farro risotto underneath was pretty amazing.

we ended with a slice of key lime pie with milk sorbet and pomegranate seeds for dessert. it was delicious! i've been on a bit of a citrus kick the past year, so this was perfect, and i haven't had anything quite like that milk sorbet before.
