philadelphia : the food.

wow, so much has happened so i am so very behind on posts! (more on that later)

anyway, we recently made a trip to philadelphia, boston and alabama. we ate well, did some sightseeing, and visited family and friends. it was such a big trip i'll have to break it into smaller bits and pieces - the first one is about the food in philly!

we landed at 6am (which was 3am our time) and had known ahead of time that we would need coffee. one of our baristas here in LA recommended we stop by oddfellows, and we're very glad they did. it was very early and they had just opened, but the barista was very sweet and pulled us some delicious espresso drinks. i had a gibraltor and james a latte. we hung out there for a little while to get ready for a day of exploring the city.

you can't go to philadelphia without getting a philly cheesesteak, so of course we had to stop by pat's king of steaks and geno's steaks. luckily it was a weekday and there wasn't a line for lunch at either place. we split up and ordered a whiz wit (cheese whiz; with onions) at each so we could do a side-by-side comparison. i've always preferred pat's, and james agreed!

that night we went to alla spina, but i'll do a separate post on that one - but i will say it was quite good and our server was great.

the next morning we slept in a bit and didn't grab breakfast. since we were on penn campus, we just had to stop by new deck, an irish pub that happened to be one of my favorite places back in college. we each got a different burger with a side of awesome fries - which is what i really missed about this place.

for an early dinner before heading out to the wells fargo center to watch the how to train your dragon arena show, we stopped in chinatown because i just had to have the shaved noodles from nan zhou hand drawn noodle (i still dream about these noodles to this day). but they moved a few doors down! and were evicted even from there! but there was another place called YUMMY lan zhou hand drawn noodle (notice it's Lan instead of Nan; shady, no?). i think its the same chef, because those noodles were just so good! the meat sauce wasn't quite up to par, so maybe it's different; but the noodles themselves were just as good. phew! crisis averted.

and last but not least, after the show and before our midnight train to boston, we stopped by oyster house. i didn't even know about this back in the day (which is probably a good thing otherwise i would have been broke). we had a dozen oysters, a plate of barbeque oysters (southern-style smoked barbecue, not barbecue sauce) and some grilled octopus. it was all super fresh, very well made, and the bartender was quite the mixologist as well.
