silverlake salsa crawl : diablo, taco fabricator

there are so many mexican taco stands and restaurants in silverlake, we started a "salsa crawl" awhile back to try and eat our way through them. i haven't blogged about it until now, but we've been to several places (tacos delta, el conquistador, mixto, burrito king (before it became mixto), ricky's fish tacos) though we have many more we haven't been. anyway, we recently saw a new place open up on sunset - it's hard to miss with its new grey facade, giant red lettering "diablo" and the subline "urban taco fabricator".

we stopped in for lunch on sunday, the space is very cool. lots of brick, and metal, and wood. the menu is scrawled across some chalkboard walls, and their tacos are definitely not standard or "authentic" - not that that means anything in this town. anyway, we each ordered a beer (pretty good draft selection, above) and two tacos: the butter-roasted maine lobster with refried brioche, key lime, crema and the beef cheek with horseradish puree and fromage blanc.

it's one of those places you order, get a number and they bring the food to their table. their numbers are printed/painted on these giant metal tubes, in going with the "fabricator" theme i guess. the tacos themselves were delicious. they are small, but very well loaded with big chunks of the specified protein. both the lobster and beef cheeks were cooked perfectly. however, it's a bit ridiculous that four tacos and two beers ran us a bill of $45 before tip. i don't think the tacos are particularly overpriced for the quality that they are, but $8 for draft beer does seem a bit steep. but maybe that's just me.
