upcoming eats and travels.

work has been a bit of a drag lately - sunday overtime, long days, lots of meetings. i'm not complaining; i love my job. but i have been more stressed out and tired lately. though that may also have to do with getting up before 6am three days a week to work out, which i've been doing for about a month now.

anyway, the point is, i've been more tired lately, but that's okay because i have some very exciting trips (and eats, of course!) coming up, and planning these things is always fun.

first, rather unexpectedly, is a trip to bakersfield this weekend. i know, i know - bakersfield? well, we're going up to see james's parents before they leave for alabama. normally, i wouldn't be that excited except i recently found out that bakersfield has some amazing basque food, and we have reservations to woolgrowers - one of the best, supposedly - on saturday night!

our first real big trip though, is one to philadelphia, boston and birmingham in september. this one has been in the works for awhile, but we finally bought our plane (and train) tickets for the entire trip last week, and i've started going into planning mode for food.

in philadelphia, we have reservations at alla spina, one of bon appetit's 50 best new restaurants of 2012, as well as tickets to the how to train your dragon arena show - which is the real reason for the philly stop. you can tell how excited i am with my toothless hat. (=

in boston, nothing is really planned yet, sincef we are going to see my family and forthcoming baby nephew, but i do have a brunch planned with two of my best friends from high school, one of which just got engaged. still trying to decide where to go for that one.

in birmingham, we are hopefully making it into the city in time for SND or sunday night dinner - a weekly tradition for james's local friends. then, on tuesday night, i'm hoping to get reservations to hot and hot fish club, whose chef - chris hastings - won this years 2012 james beard award for best chef of the south.

and last, and perhaps most exciting, is that we are going to taiwan in november. no plane tickets purchased yet, just vacation time approved. it will be james's first time and we'll be there for a little more than a week. which means he gets to meet basically all of my extended family - especially since we are going for one of my cousins' engagement. plus, we'll just get to eat SO. WELL. i'm a bit torn on whether i should do any restaurant planning at all, since the street food is so damn good. either way though, i am definitely looking forward to planning a one week exploration of the mother country, especially since i haven't been back in a long time, and i haven't explored much without explicitly traveling with (or rather, being taken around by) family.

needless to say, this is all going to be very expensive, so we're going to hunker down and go into saving mode - which unfortunately means cutting back on the good eats between now and then. but it should be worth it, i think.
