woolgrowers : basque in bakersfield.

so, supposedly there is really good basque food in bakersfield, so obviously we had to try out what i was told "the best" when we went to see james's parents on their last weekend in bakersfield. they're so sweet and made a reservation at woolgrowers when we told them we would be able to make it up for the weekend.

now, i don't know anything about basque food, so i can't say how authentic any of it is, but i definitely know that some of it is not. namely, the meal comes with fries and spaghetti.. but, everything else was really very good. the meal started with a vegetable stew, which you could add beans and salsa too. it was really delicious!

then came salad and pickled beef tongue. very nicely vinagrette'd and the tongue was definitely interesting. when that thinly sliced, i prefer just a quick grill for fry, and i'd definitely never had it picked before. but it was still good, and quite tender, although a bit sour, from the pickling.

the entrees then game with three sides - beans, fries and spaghetti. the pasta was really very good - i think the noodles are cooked/boiled in butter instead of just plain water because they were rather flavorful on their on.

for my entree, i had the oxtail stew which was really really really really good. i only got through about half of it though because there had just been so much food before the entrees arrived. james's dad had the roasted tri-tip and james had the roast leg of lamb. all in all, everything as very good and very filling. and more than anything else, it has me curious to see what real basque cuisine is, and how this place holds up.

the next day, i took the meat off the leftover oxtail and added it to toast and fried eggs to make a really great fried egg sammie. awesome!
