i ended up buying the air plant on the left, two photos up, and the succenlent pictured above. they were just so pretty i couldn't resist. coincidentally, i mentioned to one of my neighbors that i was starting to grow succulents, and they ripped these two off some of their existing plants and told me to replant them!
anyway, here is what my little succulent collection looks like now on my front balcony (i bought the succulents in the little red pot awhile back, also from san gabriel nursery).
and this is the glass "vase" i got for the air plant (from target), though i should really get my hands on some pretty drift wood to hang it all together:
